Amorphous, or 'thin-film', solar panels have been around for a few years now - and are slowly taking an ever-bigger market share from the more traditional crystalline types of panel.
Amorphous solar panels have several advantages. Firstly, they use a tiny fraction of the expensive silicon that crystalline panels use, so production costs can be markedly lower (though having said that, the manufacturing process is very complex, so companies need to make a big investment to start producing them). Secondly, they tend to be better in low-level light conditions than crystalline panels, and thirdly they can be produced in thin films, which allows flexible solar panels to be made.
Unisolar are the best known brand of amorphous solar panel. You can buy both the conventional framed panels, and the remarkable adhesive-backed flexible panel from our site, using the links on the left.
