Petition against the proposed mooring ban on Riverside, Cambridge
The Cam Conservators are proposing a ban on mooring along the right bank of the River Cam from the Museum of Technology to the end of Riverside and its junction with Stourbridge Common. The ban would come into place at the end of January 2009. The reason given by the Conservators for the ban is that it is necessary to improve navigation on the river for rowing boats.
Many boat-owners / users, local residents, riverside users object to this proposal on the grounds that:
- The majority of the boats moored in this area are used as homes. All alternative moorings in Cambridge are full. A ban would make the owners homeless.
- Some of the boats that would be removed have been moored in this area for at least 12 years and have not been considered to be a hindrance to navigation. Boats are seen to add character, provide a connection to Riverside’s industrious past and be a more aesthetically pleasing alternative to a grey, concrete river wall.
- Navigation can be improved through other means, such as trimming back the trees on the bank.
- The boats act as a safety net to rowers who would not be able to scale the wall if they fell into the water.
